Health Checks

Health Checks

We offer a variety of health checks to new and registered patients.

New Patient Health Check

All patients complete a registration form and health questionnaire and new patients aged 16 and over can request a free practice Health Check, usually within 10 days of returning the registration forms. The check takes about 20 minutes and will record height, weight, blood pressure, and offer healthy lifestyle advice.

You will also receive advice on self-examination techniques, tetanus and vaccine updates. Parents of children will be advised of our immunisation and booster program and clinic times. When arranging a new patient check, we will also aim to book a GP appointment if you are on certain long-term medication(s).

NHS Health Check

The NHS Health Check is a sophisticated check of your heart health. Aimed at adults in England aged 40 to 74, it checks your vascular or circulatory health and works out your risk of developing some of the most disabling, but preventable, illnesses. Please book a nurse appointment.

Most patients aged 40 to 74 will be invited by the NHS for a Health Check every five years, providing there is no prior diagnosis of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, kidney disease or stroke. If you are outside the age range and have concerns about your health, you should contact your GP.

Three-Yearly and Over-75 Checks

Any patient aged between 16 and 74 who has not attended surgery for the past three years (and patients aged 75 and over who have not attended surgery for the past 12-months), are entitled to request a Health Check consultation where we will make inquiries and undertake examinations as appear to be appropriate in all the circumstances.

Long Term Conditions

If you suffer from heart disease, diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or asthma you will be asked to see a nurse for an annual check-up.

It is important that you attend. If you have any concerns about your health please ring the surgery and ask to speak to the nurse who will be happy to help you.

What we do?

As your GP surgery we play a significant role in managing your long-term condition. We believe in working with you and specialists in the community to provide holistic, personal, and high-quality care.

Long-term conditions or chronic diseases are conditions for which there is currently no cure, and that are managed with drugs and other treatments.

All patients with a long-term condition should have an annual review (or ‘health MOT’). The first part of this is with a health care assistant or a nurse. At this appointment we will take a blood sample, check your blood pressure, and update other health data.

A GP will review your results, looking at your medical history and medications, and consider how together we could improve your health/management of your LTC. This may include health advice, medication changes or referrals to a community service.

Your second contact with us will be to share and discuss the GP’s recommendations with you. This appointment will also be with a healthcare assistant or a nurse. If you have more than one long term condition, we aim to make this second appointment with a nurse or GP.

Minor Surgery

Many minor skin operations can be done under local anaesthetic in our treatment room. Please discuss this with your doctor who will then arrange for you to be given an appointment.

Student Healthcare

While you are a student in Southampton we would advise you to register with a GP in the area. We can then get access to your GP notes from your home GP and liaise with them regarding your health. If you need to see a GP while you are at home then you can see your home GP as a temporary patient.

Online services

We know that being at university or college is a busy time. There are times you're going to have to visit us but there's also ways to request your regular medications, book appointments and more stuff from your phone.

Prescription charges

Prescription charges are set by the Department of Health, the government body responsible for healthcare provision in England & Wales.

If you are 16, 17 or 18 years old and in full-time education then you are automatically exempt from paying prescription charges.

However, once you become 19, you will only get free prescriptions if you apply for an exemption using the form HC1, even if you remain in full-time education. You may obtain a HC1 from reception.

If you are unable to obtain an exemption because you fail the means test for acceptance, you may alternatively wish to purchase a pre-payment certificate.

Vaccines for Students

Students may need certain vaccinations. Infections can spread among students very quickly, and there have been serious outbreaks of mumps in universities in recent years. Teenagers leaving home to go to college or university should be vaccinated against mumps and meningitis C if they didn't have those vaccinations as children. Please book an appointment with the practice nurse if you are unsure whether your vaccines are up to date.

Sexual Health for Students

We offer sexual health and contraception advice at Nicholstown Surgery. Please ask for free condoms when you register. They can also be obtained from reception, chemists and other health care providers.
